Rotary Club of North Bay

The Rotary Club of North Bay owns Camp Tillicum. The waterfront property is 72 acres with 750 feet of inviting shoreline. For nearly 80 years, Camp Tillicum has provided a summer vacation for young people on the shores of Lake Nipissing.

Mr James Nightingale and Mrs Edith Palmer purchased this property in 1926. Mr Nightingale wanted a lakeside property where boy scouts could enjoy a summertime water and camping adventure. The camp soon became popular with scouts and church groups. It was not long before buildings were erected to provide an assembly hall, kitchen and dining facilities and sleep cabins.

Tom Palmer, a respected businessman and energetic Rotary member, husband of Edith Palmer, took an active interest in young people and along with Mr Nightingale oversaw the camp operation. Together they made the camp an attractive and yearning destination for the many boys and girls who visited the camp each summer.

Through the generosity of Edith Palmer and James Nightingale, the camp property and title were gifted to the Rotary Club of North Bay in February 1949.

Their sole wish was to transfer the property to Rotary for continued operation as a camp for boys and girls.

A summer program operated by the YMCA with the support of two North Bay Rotary clubs offers a summer playground and beach facility for youth of North Bay and area.

Rotary is indebted to the Nightingale and Palmer families for their generosity and commitment to young people in our community.
